Action Plan 2000 on Climate Change

Minerals and Metals

The Government of Canada Action Plan 2000 on Climate Change has allocated $10 million over five years to the following four programs aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the Minerals and Metals Sector by 1.65 megatonnes (Mt) by 2010:

  • Supplementary Cementing Materials
  • Concrete Roads
  • Studies/Monitoring for GHG Reduction Potential
  • Enhanced Recycling

The key objective of the Minerals and Metals programs is to promote the increased use of alternative and recycled materials and to identify opportunities to further minimize GHG emissions through the adoption of new technologies and process modifications.

These four programs are overseen by a steering committee consisting of representatives from Natural Resources Canada (chair), Environment Canada and Industry Canada. Each program has its own advisory committee that directs and plans program activities. The advisory committees consist of experts in the field and representatives from industry, associations, non-governmental organizations and different levels of government.
